About Notate

Notate is a free, open‑source macOS menu‑bar app that lets you annotate anything on your screen. It captures frozen frames or timelines, lets you add numbered pins, arrows, shapes and export the results as markdown for agents or as images with comments embedded.

Capabilities

Freeze the screen

Capture a static frame instantly—including open menus, hover and focus states—while preventing underlying changes.

Record frames

Create a timeline of frames, scrub through them, and annotate any point in the sequence.

No tools (gesture‑based annotation)

Add numbered pins, arrows, ellipses, rectangles and lines through simple clicks and drags; shapes snap cleanly.

Agent‑ready exports

Export annotations as markdown that agents can act on, or as images with comments merged.

Honest dedupe

Identical frames collapse into gap markers without losing data, keeping the capture strip truthful.

Smart crop

If all annotations fall within a single window, the export automatically crops to that window instead of the full desktop.

Reopenable sessions

Save each annotation session as a portable .notate archive that can be reopened and continued later.
